Using Photoshop as a canvas

What is Digital Illustration?

Digital illustration is the use of digital tools to produce images under the direct manipulation of the artist, usually through a pointing device such as a tablet or a mouse.

A graphics tablet (Wacom) is an input device that enables a user to hand-draw images,  similar to the way a person draws images with a pencil and paper, with the active area mimicking the ratio of the computer screen.

Design areas that use this include:

• Photography

• Illustration

• Image Retouching

• Photo Manipulation

What's next?

Using software such as Adobe Photoshop the artist is able to directly draw on the canvas using the tablet.

Multiple layers are created to sketch, draw then refine detail using brushes, shapes and zoom tools within the software.

This allows precise editing and layer build up much like painting on a real canvas to give a number of styles and effects

For portraits a multiple monitor set up is used to view reference images to maximise viewing area
